Legislative Mission: Ensure pay equity, equal educational and economic opportunities at all stages of life, support pension and social security reform; and promote affordable economic self-sufficiency for women.
On July 20, 1974, the Athens of Florida Business and Professional Women's Club was chartered. This local was chartered to meet the needs of members who desired a noon meeting. The name "Athens of Florida" was chosen because of the reference made of DeLand by its founding father, Henry DeLand, that this city is a center of higher learning, an Athens of Florida. The objectives of BPW are to elevate the standards for women in business and in professions; to promote the interests of business and professional women; to extend opportunities to business and professional women through education along lines of industrial, scientific and vocational activities; and to bring about a spirit of cooperation among business and professional women of the United States. As of July, 2008, Athens of Florida has returned to meeting once a month. Due to the busy schedules of the members as well as their chance to hear our invited speakers, eeting once a month seemed to be the best idea. We will also be meeting at social gatherings around the area for everyone to get a chance of networking as well as relaxing while visiting with other members.
